Water: The Ingredient Everyone Ignores
Open almost any coffee forum thread about a disappointing cup and you'll see the same suggestions in the same order: check your grind, check your ratio, maybe check your roast date. A typical cup of drip coffee is somewhere around 98-99% water by weight. Even a strong, syrupy concentrate is still overwhelmingly water. Spend money on a better grinder, a more accurate scale, and a nicer brewer, then pour tap water straight from a source you've never actually tasted on its own, and you've optimized every variable except the one that makes up almost the entire finished drink. A test that changes people's minds faster than an explanation does
Taste your tap water on its own, plain, the way you'd taste a glass of water at a restaurant. If it tastes noticeably like chlorine, has a metallic edge, or tastes distinctly "off" in some describable way, that flavor doesn't vanish when coffee grounds are added to it — it layers underneath everything the coffee itself is contributing, muting or distorting flavors that had nothing wrong with them in the first place. The part that surprises people: too little dissolved in the water is also a problem
The intuitive fix once you start suspecting water is to switch to the purest water available — distilled, or heavily filtered through reverse osmosis. This backfires, and it surprises almost everyone the first time they hear it: coffee brewed with essentially mineral-free water comes out tasting thin and one-dimensional, missing exactly the roundness a middling tap water would have given it for free. The minerals aren't a contaminant getting in the way of a clean extraction; they're doing real chemical work during it, and stripping them out entirely removes something the brewing process was quietly relying on rather than purifying the process the way "cleaner water" sounds like it should. Why this gets treated as a niche, advanced topic instead of a basic one

In practice the fix for the majority of bad-water cases is almost embarrassingly simple: a basic carbon filter, the kind built into a cheap pitcher or even some kettles, removes most chlorine taste without stripping the water down to the over-purified extreme that causes its own problems.
Your water isn't even constant year-round
Municipal water suppliers adjust treatment seasonally and sometimes switch source reservoirs depending on rainfall and demand, which means the same tap in the same house can carry meaningfully different chlorine or chloramine levels in August than it did in February. This is part of why a recipe that tasted right for months can suddenly taste slightly off without you having changed a single thing about your beans or technique — the coffee didn't change, and neither did your grinder or your ratio; the water utility did. How to actually tell if water is your issue
Brew the identical coffee, same beans, same grind, same ratio, with your normal water and then again with filtered or bottled water as the only thing you change. If a flat, slightly medicinal or muddy quality that's shown up across many different beans and methods disappears with the water swap, you've found a persistent variable that no amount of grinder or ratio tinkering was ever going to fix, because it was never the coffee's fault.
