The AeroPress doesn't fit neatly into "immersion" or "pressure" — it does both, in sequence, inside ninety seconds to two and a half minutes. Coffee and water sit together in a sealed chamber for a short steep, the way they would in a French press, and then a plunger forces the whole mixture through a paper filter under hand pressure, the way an espresso machine forces water through a puck, just at a small fraction of the pressure and over a much thicker bed-to-plunger ratio. That short combination — steep, then press — is why an AeroPress can taste closer to a clean pour-over or closer to a concentrated, fuller-bodied shot depending entirely on how you run it, using the same device and roughly the same beans.

Standard versus inverted, and why people bother

In the standard orientation, the chamber sits on top of a cup with the filter cap already on the bottom, so water can start dripping through as soon as you pour, which shortens the effective steep time in a way that's hard to control precisely. Flip the AeroPress upside down (plunger in, filter cap off) and the grounds and water sit sealed with nowhere to go until you deliberately flip it back over onto the filter cap, which gives you an exact, controllable steep time independent of drip-through. Neither orientation is more "correct" — inverted just trades a small added step for more precise control over one of the method's few real variables.

The recipe that actually varies most

A common starting point is 16g of medium-fine grounds to roughly 200–240g of water — a ratio around 1:12 to 1:17 depending how strong you want it, since the AeroPress is often drunk both straight and diluted with hot water like an Americano. Pour water at 175–185°F for a standard recipe (cooler than most methods, because the sealed chamber traps heat and a short steep at full boiling temperature over-extracts fast), stir a few times to make sure everything's wet, steep for 60–90 seconds, then press down steadily over roughly 20–30 seconds. A plunge that takes far less than that means you're pressing too hard; one that won't move at all usually means the grind is too fine for the filter and paper you're using.

Plunge speed is this method's hidden variable

Most guides talk about grind, ratio and steep time and skip the thing that changes the cup most between two people using the exact same recipe: how fast and how hard you press. A fast, forceful plunge behaves like a very short, high-pressure extraction and tends to pull a sharper, sometimes bitter result even at a grind and steep time that would otherwise be fine. A slow, steady plunge over closer to 30 seconds gives the water more contact time on its way through and produces a rounder, less sharp cup from the identical recipe. If two AeroPress cups made with the same beans, grind and ratio taste different, plunge speed is the first thing worth comparing before touching anything else.

Grind sits in the middle, on purpose

Because the total brew time is so short, grind can't be nearly as coarse as a French press's — you don't have four minutes for a coarse particle to give anything up. But it also doesn't need espresso's fineness, since you're not fighting nine bars of pressure through a compacted puck. A medium-fine grind, similar to table salt or a bit finer, splits the difference: fine enough to extract meaningfully in ninety seconds, coarse enough that hand pressure alone can still push it through without turning the plunge into a fight.

The paddle stir, and why it's not optional

Because the chamber is narrow and the steep is short, an uneven pour leaves dry pockets of grounds floating at the surface that a four-minute French press steep would eventually even out on its own but a ninety-second AeroPress steep won't. Three or four firm stirs with the included paddle right after pouring — enough to fully wet every particle — matters more here than in almost any other immersion method precisely because there isn't time for the imbalance to correct itself later in the brew.

Filter type changes the cup more than the small size suggests

The stock paper filters strip out oils and nearly all fine particulate, producing a clean, almost filter-coffee-like cup despite the pressure step. Swapping to a reusable metal filter lets more oil and fine sediment through, closer to a French press's fuller body and slightly more texture — same recipe, same grind, a genuinely different cup just from the filter material, which is a cheap and easy experiment if a paper-filtered AeroPress has ever tasted thinner than you expected.

Plunge speed breaks more cups than grind or ratio does

  • Pressing too hard and too fast. The single most common cause of a harsher-than-expected cup; slow down before you assume the grind or ratio is off.
  • Steeping too long with the standard (non-inverted) orientation. If coffee is already dripping through while you're still stirring, your real steep time is longer and less predictable than the timer suggests — this is exactly what the inverted method fixes.

  • Skipping the rinse. Paper-filter papery taste is as real on an AeroPress's small round filters as it is on any pour-over dripper.
  • Ignoring water temperature. Full-boiling water in a sealed chamber over even a short steep extracts noticeably faster than the same steep at 180°F, which is why AeroPress recipes tend to run cooler than filter-method ones.

Where it sits against the methods it's most often compared to

The AeroPress and espresso share the word "pressure" but not much else — an AeroPress generates a tiny fraction of an espresso machine's nine bars, over a much longer contact time, through a much coarser grind. Against a French press, the AeroPress trades some of that method's full body for a cleaner, paper-filtered cup in under half the time.
