Ask a moka pot what ratio it uses and the honest answer is: whichever one its basket and boiler give you. Filling the funnel-shaped basket level with grounds and the boiler chamber to its built-in pressure valve, as the manufacturer intends, lands you around 1:10 — light closer to 1:12, strong closer to 1:8 — but unlike a pour-over or French press, you can't just decide to use more water for the same coffee, because the boiler only holds what it holds.
The basket, not a decision, sets the dose
Moka pots are sold by cup count — 1-cup, 3-cup, 6-cup, 9-cup — and each size ships with a basket sized to match its boiler almost exactly, so the "dose" is really "however much fine-medium grind fills that basket level, unpressed." A 3-cup pot's basket typically holds around 12-13g; a 6-cup pot's basket, closer to 18g; the boiler volume scales roughly the same way. Packing the basket tighter than level doesn't raise your dose meaningfully — it just restricts flow and risks stalling the brew or blowing past the pressure valve — so "ratio" on a moka pot is mostly a question of choosing the right pot size for how much coffee you want, not weighing anything.
Working out what a 6-cup pot actually gives you
Moka "cups" are small, closer to a 60ml espresso-style demitasse than a mug — a 6-cup pot produces somewhere around 300-360ml of coffee, not six regular mugs. At an 18g basket dose and the balanced 1:10 target, that lines up with roughly 180ml of water in the boiler; the remainder of that output volume accounts for the concentrated, intense character moka coffee has once poured, since it's much closer to espresso strength than to drip coffee despite using a coarser grind and no pump.
The pressure valve is the actual limit
Every moka pot has a safety valve in the boiler set to release at a specific pressure, and filling the boiler above the valve's level is both against the ratio the pot was designed for and a genuine safety issue — excess water reduces the steam pressure needed to push water up through the funnel properly and can cause sputtering or an uneven, weak brew. Filling to that marked line, not guessing, is the actual water-side half of this ratio.
Adjusting strength within those constraints
You can't add more water to a full moka pot, but you can change the basket dose slightly by grinding a touch finer (which packs marginally more coffee into the same basket volume) for a stronger cup, or a touch coarser for a lighter one — small moves compared to what changing dose does on a pour-over, because the basket's physical volume is the real ceiling. Diluting the finished coffee with hot water after brewing, rather than trying to under-fill the basket, is the more reliable way to get a genuinely lighter cup from the same pot.
Where this goes wrong
Under-filling the basket to stretch a bag of coffee produces channeling inside the funnel almost identical to a pour-over bed with dry spots, and the fix is the same idea: fill it properly rather than trying to make less coffee do more work.
