Nitro cold brew runs stronger at the base than most regular cold brew — 1:8 balanced, 1:6 for a stronger keg batch, 1:10 for a lighter one — and the reason isn't a different brewing process, it's what happens after brewing. Regular cold brew concentrate gets cut with water, milk, or ice at the moment you drink it. Nitro cold brew gets infused with pressurized nitrogen and poured straight from a tap or can, with no dilution step at all — so the batch itself has to be strong enough to stand alone.

Why "poured straight" changes the target strength

Once nitrogen goes into a keg of cold brew and it's dispensed through a restrictor plate, the result is what ends up in the glass, full stop — there's no barista or drinker adding water afterward the way a cold brew concentrate assumes. That means the ratio going into the keg has to already be at drinking strength, not concentrate strength waiting to be cut, which is why nitro's range (1:6 to 1:10) sits meaningfully stronger than the lighter, ready-to-drink end of regular cold brew's range, even though both start from the same basic steep.

The texture does some of the strength's work

Nitrogen's fine, cascading bubbles create a creamy, almost stout-like mouthfeel that measurably changes how strength and bitterness read on the palate — the same brew poured flat would taste noticeably sharper and more bitter than it does with nitro's texture softening it. That's part of why nitro batches can run this strong without tasting harsh: the serving method itself is doing some of the balancing work that dilution would otherwise handle.

Working a keg-sized batch

At 1:8, a 100g dose produces 800ml. Scaling to a 5-liter keg at the same balanced ratio calls for about 625g of coarsely ground coffee steeped for the same 18-24 hours regular cold brew uses. At 1:6 for a bigger, more assertive keg, that same 5 liters wants closer to 833g; at 1:10 for a gentler pour, closer to 500g.

Nitro at home versus at a bar

A home nitro setup — a whipped-cream-style charger and a specialized lid, or a small dedicated nitro maker — uses the same ratio logic as a keg, just at a smaller scale; the nitrogen infusion step doesn't change the brewing math, only what happens to the finished, already-brewed liquid afterward.

Moving the ratio

Reach for 1:6 for a bolder pour meant to be sipped slowly, closer to a stout in body. Reach for 1:10 for something gentler that's still meant to be enjoyed without dilution. It's not just strong regular cold brew with gas added

It's tempting to assume any leftover cold brew concentrate can go straight into a nitro dispenser, but concentrate brewed for later dilution at 1:5 is stronger than even nitro's boldest 1:6 preset, and pouring it undiluted through a nitro tap produces something closer to a caffeine-forward syrup than a balanced drink. Brewing specifically within nitro's own range, rather than repurposing concentrate meant for cutting, is what actually gets the intended result.
