A single countdown timer is nearly useless for most brew methods, because the interesting part isn't the total time — it's the individual stages inside it. A pour-over needs a 30-second bloom, then a couple of controlled pours, then a drawdown you mostly just watch; an AeroPress needs a bloom, a steep, and then a press that should be steady rather than rushed. The brew timer breaks each method into its own real stages, with a chime marking the boundary between them, instead of one undifferentiated count to zero.

A pour-over's stages, broken down

Look at the panel here and you're seeing the pour-over stage list exactly as the timer runs it: 30 seconds of bloom, two 45-second pours, then a 90-second drawdown, landing at roughly three and a half minutes total. Nothing about that total is rounded for convenience — it's built by adding up what each stage genuinely needs, which is also why a French press's single long steep or an espresso shot's five-second pre-infusion and 25-second pull produce timers that look nothing alike, not just shorter or longer versions of the same shape.

Why stage boundaries matter more than the total

Missing the moment a bloom ends and a pour should start is a more common mistake than getting the total brew time wrong by a few seconds, because the bloom needs to happen before gas trapped in fresh grounds interferes with even saturation, and a pour that starts too early or too late changes how the water contacts the bed for the rest of the brew. A chime at each stage boundary means you can pour, plunge or press at the right moment without watching the clock continuously.

Long steeps included, honestly

Cold brew and nitro cold brew get a timer too, even though their "stage" is a single steep lasting 12 to 24 hours — useful mainly as a way to log a real start time and get a genuine countdown to when the batch is ready, rather than guessing at how long it's actually been sitting in the fridge.

Instant coffee and pods get one too, honestly

Instant coffee and single-serve pods barely need timing — instant is stirred in under a minute and a pod machine runs its own automatic cycle — but they're included for completeness rather than left out as an afterthought. A short "stir" or "automatic extraction" stage still gives you something concrete to watch rather than guessing when it's genuinely ready to drink.

Sound, not just a silent countdown

A visual-only timer is easy to miss while you're doing something else in the kitchen — rinsing a filter, warming a mug, grinding the next dose. A chime at each stage boundary means you can look away from the screen entirely and still catch the moment a bloom ends or a press should begin, which matters more on methods like pour-over where the exact pour timing affects the cup.
