Caffeine content in a cup of coffee varies with the bean, the roast, the grind, the brew method and how much water touches how much coffee — which is exactly why this tool returns a range rather than a single confident number pretending to know something it can't. Pick a method and a serving size, and it scales a typical published range for that method to your size, the same way the ratio calculator scales grams and millilitres.

What the panel here calculates is an 8oz (240ml) serving of drip coffee, and the range it returns is wide on purpose — food-composition references describe drip coffee the same way, because "drip coffee" is really a spectrum running from a weak, over-diluted office pot to a strong, carefully ratioed batch, not one fixed number with a label on it.
Why espresso doesn't mean "high caffeine"
A single shot of espresso contains less total caffeine than a full cup of drip coffee, simply because the serving is so much smaller — the concentration per millilitre is higher, but the volume is a fraction of a mug. A drip coffee habit and an espresso habit aren't automatically comparable just because both are "coffee"; serving size does most of the work in the comparison.
Why the range is wide even for one method
Two 8oz cups of "drip coffee" can differ in caffeine by a factor of two depending on the bean's natural caffeine content, the roast (very slightly lower in darker roasts), the grind, and how concentrated the brewer's default ratio actually is. That spread is real, not a hedge to avoid giving you an answer — it's the same reason this site treats brew ratio itself as a range across light, balanced and strong rather than a single number.
Decaf isn't zero
Decaffeination removes the large majority of caffeine, not all of it — a typical decaf cup still carries a small residual amount, commonly cited in the range of a few milligrams up to around 15mg for an 8oz serving, depending on the decaffeination process used. If caffeine sensitivity, medication interactions or a medical condition are a real concern, that's a conversation for a doctor or pharmacist, not a coffee reference site — the ranges here exist to satisfy curiosity and help compare methods, nothing more specific than that.
