Worked for a 20g dose, the typical amount for one serving of kalita wave. Grind: Medium-fine.

Kalita Wave's balanced setting is 1:16 — tighten to 1:15 for more intensity, or loosen to 1:17 for a gentler pour. Those numbers line up almost exactly with V60's, except each preset sits one point higher: where V60 runs 1:14/1:15/1:16, Wave runs 1:15/1:16/1:17. That one-point shift isn't rounding; it reflects a real difference in how the two drippers' beds drain.

The flat bed changes what the same ratio tastes like

V60's cone and single large hole drain fastest through the center, leaving the bed unevenly saturated moment to moment. Kalita Wave's flat bottom and three small drainage holes spread that same flow so no one channel dominates, keeping the grounds in touch with water for a steadier, more uniform stretch of the brew instead of racing through a central path. That fuller, more consistent contact extracts slightly more from the same dose — which is why a Wave recipe uses a touch more water for the same coffee to land at a comparable final strength, rather than because the method is somehow "weaker."

The numbers at a 20g dose

At 1:16, a 20g dose calls for 320ml of water. At 1:15, 300ml, for a fuller cup. At 1:17, 340ml, for something lighter. If you're used to V60 numbers and moving to a Wave, using the exact same water figures will generally taste slightly stronger than you're used to — that's expected, not a sign you did the math wrong.

Flat-bottom filters need a specific match

Kalita's proprietary flat-bottom filters are sized specifically for the Wave's three-hole base; using a cone-style filter in a Wave dripper, or vice versa, breaks the even flow this whole ratio logic depends on. This is worth checking before troubleshooting a recipe that "should" work but tastes off — a mismatched filter changes the brew more than a gram or two of dosing error would.

Why the range is forgiving without being wide

The Wave's more even drainage makes it noticeably more forgiving of pour technique than V60 — an uneven pour is less likely to channel badly — but the ratio range itself is still only two points wide, the same span as V60's, because the total brew time is still short enough that a genuinely wrong dose shows up in the cup regardless of how evenly it drained.

Adjusting for your cup

Move to 1:15 for a darker roast or milk-based drink. Move to 1:17 for a light, delicate origin where the Wave's even extraction can show off subtlety without extra body getting in the way. The ratio calculator runs the numbers for any dose.

Two sizes, same ratios

Kalita sells the Wave in a smaller 155 size built around roughly a 15-20g dose and a larger 185 size comfortable up to about 30g, and both use the same three ratios on this page — nothing about the numbers changes with dripper size, only how much total coffee and water you're working with in a given brew.

Reading the bed instead of just trusting the number

Because the Wave's flat filter sits slightly separated from the plastic dripper's walls, a small gap of air circulates underneath the filter during the brew, which is part of what keeps drainage steady rather than stalling — worth knowing if a Wave brew seems to drain unevenly despite a correct ratio and grind, since a filter seated wrong against the dripper's ridges can disrupt that airflow.
