Siphon coffee lands in nearly the same ratio territory as a V60 or Kalita Wave: 1:15 balanced, 1:13 when you want more weight in the cup, 1:16 when you want more clarity. That's despite brewing in a completely different way — the vacuum process still delivers a broadly filter-coffee style of extraction by the time the cloth or paper filter does its job.
What's actually happening when the ratio is "brewing"
Once vapor pressure has pushed the water up where the grounds are waiting, what follows is a short, full-contact steep — a minute or two, closer in spirit to French press than to a pour-over's single pass — before the heat comes off and the brewed coffee gets pulled back down through a filter. The ratio only has that steep phase to work with; everything that happens afterward is filtration and delivery, not a second round of extraction.
The numbers at a 22g dose
At 1:15, a 22g dose needs 330ml of water. At 1:13, 286ml, for a fuller cup that leans into the immersion side of siphon's character. At 1:16, 352ml, for something lighter and closer to what a fast-draining cone would produce. Siphon's typical dose runs slightly higher than a V60's 20g because the immersion phase extracts a bit differently than a continuous pour, and recipes have converged on a few extra grams to compensate.
Why the range sits tighter than French press's
Even though siphon involves full immersion like a French press, its steep is much shorter — a minute or two rather than four — so there's less time available to smooth over a ratio that's off by a meaningful margin, similar to the logic that keeps V60's window narrow. The combination of immersion contact and a short steep window is fairly unusual among the methods on this site, and it's part of why siphon has its own tighter range rather than borrowing French press's wider one.
Adjusting for roast and taste
Move toward 1:13 for a medium or dark roast, or when you want the fuller body the immersion phase already leans toward. Move toward 1:16 for a light, delicate origin where the vacuum method's clarity is the whole point of choosing it over a heavier brewer. Where the ratio isn't the explanation
A siphon that drains explosively fast once the heat is removed, or one that never fully drains back down, points to a filter or seal problem rather than a ratio issue — the coffee-to-water math above assumes the vacuum mechanism itself is working properly. Muddiness in the cup usually traces back to an unrinsed cloth filter rather than anything about how much coffee went in, so rinse the filter thoroughly before assuming the dose needs adjusting.
Bulb size and scaling up
Smaller siphon bulbs are built around something close to this page's 22g reference dose; larger bulbs sold for three or five servings scale the same three ratios up proportionally rather than needing a different recipe. Because the immersion phase is timed by the brewer, not by how fast water happens to drain through a bed, a bigger batch doesn't drag the steep out the way a bigger pour-over batch can drag out drawdown.
