Everything that goes into a good cup of coffee is well documented somewhere, but it's rarely documented as a single connected system. The five variables that actually matter

Start with ratio, because it sets the ceiling
Ratio decides how much dissolved coffee ends up in your cup, independent of everything else. Brew the same coffee at 1:12 and 1:18 and you get two different drinks even if the grind, time and temperature are identical — one is going to taste stronger regardless of how well-extracted either one is. The ratio that's "balanced" varies a lot by method, and that variation isn't arbitrary. Espresso runs near 1:2 because it's a short, high-pressure extraction through a small, tightly packed puck. Pour-over runs 1:15 to 1:17 because water passes through once at normal pressure. French press runs a bit stronger, 1:12 to 1:17, because the long steep extracts efficiently even at a coarser grind. Cold brew runs stronger still as a concentrate, 1:5 to 1:12, because it's designed to be diluted before drinking. Then grind size, matched to your method
Grind size and brew method are locked together — a grind that's perfect for one method will under- or over-extract badly in another, because contact time and extraction pressure differ so much between them. Espresso needs a fine grind because the whole extraction happens in 25–30 seconds under pressure; cold brew needs a coarse grind because it's steeping for half a day and would turn to sludge at anything finer. Time and temperature move extraction in the same direction
More time and more heat both extract more from the grounds — they're not independent variables so much as two ways of turning the same dial. The coffee itself: roast, freshness and processing
Technique can only work with what the beans actually contain. Roast level trades origin character for roast character as it darkens, and it changes density enough to affect grind and ratio slightly. Water: the ingredient hiding in plain sight
Coffee is over 98% water by weight in the finished cup, and water carrying unusual mineral content, chlorine, or an off pH will flavor your coffee before the coffee gets a say. Common myths worth retiring
"Darker roast means more caffeine." It's very slightly the opposite — extended roasting burns off a small amount of caffeine along the way — but that's a rounding error next to what actually moves your caffeine intake: which method you brewed with and how many grams you used. Chase those two levers if caffeine is the goal; roast level isn't where the real difference lives. "Expensive equipment guarantees good coffee." A $30 dripper used with a controlled ratio, a decent grind and reasonably fresh beans will out-perform a $300 setup used carelessly; equipment raises your ceiling, it doesn't replace technique. "Coffee needs to be bitter to be strong." These are different qualities entirely — strength is concentration, set by ratio, and bitterness is a flavor defect from over-extraction or a very dark roast, and a strong cup at the right ratio and extraction shouldn't taste bitter at all. A worked morning, start to finish
Say you've got a bag of medium-roast, washed Colombian beans, a basic pour-over cone, and fifteen minutes.
